It has been reported that certain parts of the pupae of Euscepes postfasciatus change in colour as the pupal stage progresses. Thus, we examined whether the age of pupae was estimated using their colouration. Body colour changing of pupae was observed with both a stereomicroscope and naked eyes, and a sequence of the colour changing was divided into 10 colour grades. Pupae from a stock culture were separated according to the grades. The pupae separated were reared and recorded the date when adults emerged. It was clear that the colour changing of pupae was correlated with their age, and the pupae at the age of one day before adult eclosion were distinguished according to the colour grades without fail. |
